MA in Geography (Coastal Management & GIS)

Typ des Eintrags: Akademische Lehrveranstaltung
Rhythmus: ständig
Webseite: http://www.ucc.ie/academic/geography/
Ort: University College Cork, IRELAND
Beschreibung: This one-year programme has been designed to provide students, from different backgrounds, with an advanced understanding of data management skills and other related areas of Geography, whilst developing particularly a specialist knowledge and practise in the field of Coastal Management.
Two specialist modules deal with integrated coastal management (ICM), and related Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and SDI techniques. These module areas are worth 20 credits, out of a 60-credit total, with these skill values further developed in the Dissertation module (25 credits). The modules explore the origins and rationale for environmental management, specifically ICM and planning; together with the major concepts, guiding principles, the key issues, techniques and developments in Coastal Management. These themes are linked to case studies that explore the applications of ICM, both in Ireland and internationally, using GIS techniques and approaches.
Together with staff in the Geography Department, the degree programme also involves the expertise of coastal practitioners and other outside speakers in module lectures and particularly members of the Coastal and Marine Resources Centre (CMRC-ERI). The CMRC and the Department of Geography, UCC have an internationally recognised expertise in coastal, climate and GIS work, allowing students the opportunity to appreciate the breadth and value of this rapidly growing study area. The CMRC staff work closely with Geography in delivering the programme.
While some students might wish to use this degree programme as a springboard into a career, into the environmental management and especially the coastal policy sectors, it will also enhance the marketability of those seeking employment in environmental and planning fields that are not directly related to the degree. Many career opportunities, both in the public (different types of local-national-international government areas), commercial and consultancy sectors are now available, involving coastal/ environmental management and spatial data/ GIS skills. The programme is intended both as an ‘added value’ skills programme to undergraduate training, as well as a more specialist course leading, in particular, to careers in the major areas of coastal policy/ planning, environmental management and geoinformatics (see Careers Guide, below). Students that have taken the programme in previous years have come from a variety of training backgrounds, e.g., The Arts and Social Sciences, the Sciences and from Engineering. The minimum qualification required in any of these suitable degree areas is a ‘good’ 2:2 class undergraduate degree.
