Beschreibung:

This MSc programme aims at providing conceptual, technical and applied skills training in the field of coastal management and planning, in the support techniques of Geographical Information Systems (GIS)/Spatial Data Infrastructures and in other areas of information technologies (e.g., remote sensing techniques) relevant to coastal environments. It is intended that the programme will equip participants with advanced skills in data gathering, processing and analysis and in the development of research abilities; the provision of a deeper understanding of the contextual subject fields of shoreline protection and of Earth environmental management; to facilitate entry into occupations in these subject fields.
The one-year taught Masters programme has been developed in response to demand from coastal management practitioners and both undergraduate/ postgraduate student interest, expressed over many years. This demand has arisen particularly since the 1990s and the growing community awareness of the serious need for planned responses to environmental management needs, particularly for the future (e.g., as through the UNEP & WMO Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), under the pressures of global to regional scale climate changes and their repercussions. University Departments and Research Centres contributing to the programme include Geography (also co-ordinating), Civil and Environmental Engineering, ZEPS, the CMRC and the HMRC.

The MSc (Applied Science) in Coastal Management and Informatics with GIS is a one-year full-time degree (Start: Oct. and end mid Sept. following), comprising 90 credits involving both taught course work (45 credits) and a dissertation (45 credits). The aim of the programme is to provide conceptual, technical and applied skills training in the field of coastal management and planning, in the support techniques of Geographical Information Systems/ Spatial Data Infrastructures and in other areas of information technologies (e.g., remote sensing techniques) relevant to coastal environments; to equip the students with advanced skills in data gathering, processingand analysis and in the development of research abilities; to provide a deeper understanding of the contextual subject fields of shoreline protection and of Earth environmental management; to facilitate entry into occupations in these subject fields.
