Zusammenfassung: Due to negative sand balance at the beach close to the Pirolatal on Langeoog, strong erosion of the outer dunes takes place. Since 1997 seven artificial dunes were built to protect this valley against breaching of the dunes. These artificial dunes consist of sand from the beach. Because this material is unsorted and non-aeolian, differences to the natural dunes can be expected. To indicate these differences sediment and vegetation of the artificial dunes have been analysed and compared with those of natural dunes of the island. The characteristics of the artificial dunes have been used to create a prediction concerning the development of these dunes. By grain size analysis the artificial dunes can be described as worse sorted and coarser grained than the natural dunes. The analysis of the humus content, the pH-value and the content of carbonate proves the same processes of accumulation of humus, acidification and decalcification concerning both types of dunes. While the classification of vegetative association and the frequency of species do not allow any comparability, it is possible to document increasing vegetation with the time on artificial and natural dunes. The processes of accumulation of humus, decalcification and acidification are expected to proceed and initiate soil formation. Finally the close connection between vegetation and the conditions regarding the location prevents a natural development of theartificial dunes.
