Zusammenfassung:

Investigations in the frame of the KFKI-Project “Sedimentinventory Northfrisian Waddensea” show, that the predominat amount of sediment was imported to the waddensea (more or less from the north sea) and came not from internal rearrangement. There is enough sediment inside the system for a growing of the higher parts of the wadden sea following a rising sea level. This leads to steepening of the relief and to coarser sediment. In the non-dyked areas a coarsening from the lower to the upper region (first meter) can be identified. Only where coastal protection measures take place, like dams, reclamation ditches, groynes etc. fine sediment will accumulate. The “biological integrity” of the waddensea will move to a mixed sediment mudflat and sand flat biocenosis. Due to rising sea level additional (upper) areas will be influenced by higher energy input and only coarse sediment can settle down, independent from the availability of fine sediment.
