Zusammenfassung:

The 2002/413/EC European Recommendation on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) has promoted the development of national strategies. These strategies give an overview of ICZM and were evaluated in the “Rupprecht Report”. The Baltic Sea region can be proposed as an example to show the current situation and to discuss the progress made. It is first useful to consider in parallel to ICZM the different fields linked to it, where the European Commission has been active (Maritime Strategy, Green book, Natura 2000, Water Framework Directive). Through the analysis of deficits, the role and the tasks of supra-regional organisations in ICZM can be underlined. This can be illustrated by the contribution of EUCC-The Coastal Union to a successful coastal zone management in the Baltic Sea region.
