Zusammenfassung:

The ecology of the Baltic Sea is both complex and heterogeneous, particularly in the German area. This is due to supra-regional interactions between physical, chemical and biological features. We present aspects of habitats of macrozoobenthos which are linked to features of regional landscape policy of marine areas in the German Baltic Sea. These were supplemented by analyses of benthic habitats and communities. We describe marine biotopes and provide explanations for the specific characters of the macrozoobenthos and macrophytes. In the next years this marine area will undergo various forms of land use, such as installations of wind power farms or underwater cables. The area east of Rügen will be particularly affected. To avoid or reduce any conflict, regional policy has to contribute substantially. But, the regional policy cannot solve all goal conflicts, especially because the region will change in the near future, both in quality and in quantity, and it will reach new dimensions. At this point, the ICZM aims at implementing new standards of quality assessment and conflict solution.
